Individual Mentoring, Manuscript Editing,
and Private Tutelage

I have several private students in poetry and fiction writing
(no more than five at any given time), and I also perform
manuscript editing services. People interested in working with
me should query me about a schedule and are also urged to
know my own work some.

People who have worked with me have gone on to publish
books with major university presses, published in serious
literary journals, and published on smaller literary presses.

My criticism is honest--I praise what's working, point out what
isn't and explain why it isn't working--and reflects my years of
experience as an editor, writer, writing teacher, and critic. I
do try to undersand my students' personal aesthetics, and try
to guide them based on fidelity to that aesthetic and
appropriate challenges to it.

Private student rates:
  • $75 for up to eight pages of poetry or one story up to
ten pages double spaced. Students get a line by line
reading, a written evaluation of the work, suggested
reading, and a suggestions for new poems or a new
    story.

  • $85 for a story longer than ten pages.

Manuscript review rates:
  • Basic reading: $150           I read the entire manuscript,
make individual poem suggestions, talk about the
organization of the manuscript and its vision, and
discuss what's working, what's not, what's too "there"
in the manuscript, and what's missing.

  • Advanced Reading: $225   All the services provided
above, plus I look at poems not included in the
manuscript to see if/how they fit, suggest places to
send the manuscript when it's ready, suggested
    reading list.

I am also available for private workshops with writing groups;
feel free to contact me regarding rates and opportunities.
